Painted plaster ornament, France, 18th century, (1898). Creator: Unknown
Painted plaster ornament, France, 18th century, (1898). Fig 1: Wood carving on a wainscot in the music room of the arsenal library at Paris, style of Louis XV [c1715-1774]. Figs 2 and 3: Carved pilaster from the wainscot of a saloon at Paris, style of Louis XVI [c1774-1792]. Fig 4: Painted frieze from the boudoir of Queen Marie Antoinette in the Castle at Fontainebleau, style of Louis XVI. Fig 5: Panel of a stucco cavetto at a ceiling of a saloon at Paris, style of Louis XVI. Fig 6. Carved wall panel above a saloon door in the Hotel de Ville at Bordeaux, style of Louis XVI..." Zopfstyle" - this term is sometimes mistaken for Barocque, even Rococo, whilst it signifies merely the style, (certainly rather barren and stiff sometimes), which art chose under Louis XVI, in opposition as it were, to the pompous and confused style under Louis XV, by returning to the antique. Compared with the extravagances of Rococo the quiet, strict forms of the Zopfstyle produce a feeling of satisfaction in the mind of the beholder, unless, as is often the case, repose degenerates into rigidness, and strictness into barrenness. Plate 84 from " The Historic Styles of Ornament" translated from the German of H. Dolmetsch. [B.T. Batford, London, 1898]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a collection of exquisite French plaster ornaments from the 18th century. The creator of these stunning pieces remains unknown, adding an air of mystery and intrigue to their beauty. The image is divided into six distinct figures, each representing a different style prevalent during the reigns of Louis XV and Louis XVI. Fig 1 displays a wood carving on a wainscot in the music room of the arsenal library in Paris, showcasing the elegant style of Louis XV. Figs 2 and 3 feature carved pilasters from a saloon in Paris, reflecting the refined aesthetics of Louis XVI. Fig 4 presents a painted frieze from Queen Marie Antoinette's boudoir at Fontainebleau Castle, exemplifying the opulent style favored by Louis XVI. Fig 5 exhibits a panel of stucco cavetto at a ceiling in another Parisian saloon, showcasing the restrained yet sophisticated elements characteristic of this era. Lastly, fig 6 portrays an intricately carved wall panel above a saloon door in Bordeaux's Hotel de Ville, embodying the Zopfstyle - an artistic movement that emerged under Louis XVI as an alternative to Rococo extravagance. While some may mistake Zopfstyle for Baroque or Rococo due to its occasional stiffness and simplicity, it actually represents art's return to ancient influences with quiet and strict forms. This plate from "The Historic Styles of Ornament" offers viewers both satisfaction and contemplation through its portrayal of various styles within French decorative arts history.
