Panel from a Triptych: St. Anthony Abbot, 1458. These panels depicting Saints Anthony the Abbot and Michael originally flanked a central scene of the Madonna and Child with Angels, now lost, to form a triptych. Giovanni di Cosimo de Medici of Florence commissioned the ensemble in 1457 as a gift to Alfonso V of Aragon. Fra Filippo Lippi, a Carmelite friar and one of the great masters of early Renaissance Florence, depicted realistic, weighty figures in a three-dimensional space using a system of linear perspective, inspired partly by Masaccios Brancacci Chapel, and reflected in the background architecture. Saint Anthony the Abbot rejected all earthly possessions in pursuit of a contemplative life in the desert. He is generally regarded as the founder of monasticism and is depicted wearing a monks habit. Saint Michaels sword and shield refer to his role as heavens defender against evil

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a panel from a triptych created by the renowned Italian artist Filippo Lippi in 1458. Originally, these panels flanked a central scene of the Madonna and Child with Angels, forming an exquisite triptych. Commissioned by Giovanni di Cosimo de Medici of Florence as a gift to Alfonso V of Aragon, this artwork holds great historical significance. Lippi, known for his mastery during the early Renaissance period, skillfully portrayed realistic and weighty figures within a three-dimensional space using linear perspective techniques inspired by Masaccio's Brancacci Chapel. The background architecture beautifully reflects this artistic approach. The depicted panel features Saint Anthony the Abbot, who dedicated his life to contemplation in the desert after renouncing all earthly possessions. As the founder of monasticism, he is shown wearing a humble monk's habit. On another panel stands Saint Michael with his sword and shield symbolizing his role as heaven's defender against evil forces. Painted using tempera on wood panel, this masterpiece now resides at The Cleveland Museum of Art where it continues to captivate art enthusiasts worldwide. This stunning print allows us to appreciate Lippi's exceptional talent and immerse ourselves in the rich history and spirituality captured within this remarkable work of art.
