EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the distinguished figure of Pedro Betancour, a prominent Cuban leader from the early 20th century. Born in Celba Mocha in 1859, Betancour pursued a career in Medicine before becoming deeply involved in the revolution against Spanish rule. In 1895, he joined the revolutionary forces but was subsequently exiled to Spain. Undeterred by this setback, Betancour returned to Cuba in 1896 and rose through the ranks to become Chief of Matanzas province. His exceptional leadership skills led him to serve as governor from 1899 to 1902. Beyond his political achievements, General Pedro Betancourt also made significant contributions as an elected Senator for Cuba. His dedication and commitment to his country were unwavering until his passing on March 19,1933. The portrait captured here portrays a man with a commanding presence; dressed impeccably in a suit that befits his status as both a military general and statesman. The striking profile shot highlights his well-groomed beard, adding an air of wisdom and authority. This historic cigar card from "The History of Cuba" series by Geografico Universal serves as an enduring tribute to General Pedro Betancourt's pivotal role during times of rebellion and revolution. It is not only a testament to Cuban history but also reminds us of the remarkable individuals who shaped it.
