Performers at the Villa of Belgatchia, Calcutta, from a sketch by one of our special artists, 1876. Among the feats...was the ingenious musician, Baboo Rally Prosonno Bannerjee, playing on two flutes, or trumpets, with his neck. This performance excited great interest. At first it was thought that he was producing the sound by his mouth, or by ventriloquism; but it seems there is a very delicate apparatus within the instrument, so fine that the small quantity of air propelled by the pressure of the neck on the mouth of the tube is sufficient to give forth a sound...The [karatala] instruments are of steel, and lie in the palm of the hand; they are made to clink together, producing a delicate sound almost like the dropping of water. The hymn chanted by the pundit Samaswami and his two pupils was in Sanscrit, so its meaning was not understood by most of the company'. From "Illustrated London News", 1876

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken from a sketch by an unidentified special artist in 1876, depicts a mesmerizing performance at the Villa of Belgatchia in Calcutta. The scene is filled with intrigue and wonder as performers showcase their unique talents to an enthralled audience. At the forefront is the enigmatic musician, Baboo Rally Prosonno Bannerjee, who captivates the crowd with his extraordinary ability to play on two flutes, or trumpets, using only his neck. The audience is initially baffled, believing that he is producing the sound through his mouth or by means of ventriloquism. However, it is later revealed that there is a delicate apparatus within the instrument, allowing the slight pressure of his neck on the mouth of the tube to produce sound. In the background, three performers skillfully manipulate the karatalas, steel instruments that lie in the palm of their hands. The instruments clink together, creating a delicate sound reminiscent of the dropping of water. The hypnotic rhythm accompanies the chanting of the pundit Samaswami and his two pupils, whose voices carry forth a hymn in Sanskrit. The meaning of the hymn eludes most of the onlookers, adding to the allure and mystique of this extraordinary performance.
