Pevensey Castle, Sussex, 1894. Creator: Unknown
Pevensey Castle, Sussex, 1894. Medieval castle and former Roman Saxon Shore fort. A castle was first built at Pevensey early in the 4th century by the Romans, but it was destroyed by Saxon invaders in the late 5th century. Left derelict for some 600 years, the castle was then rebuilt by Harold Godwinson, Earl of Wessex (later King Harold of England). The Normans made some additions to the castle after 1066 but by Elizabethan times it had fallen into disrepair. From Beautiful Britain; views of our stately homes. [The Werner Company of Chicago, 1894]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the year 1894, capturing the timeless beauty of Pevensey Castle in Sussex. The creator remains unknown, but their lens skillfully portrays this medieval castle, which holds a rich history dating back centuries. Originally built by the Romans in the early 4th century as a Saxon Shore fort, Pevensey Castle suffered destruction at the hands of Saxon invaders during the late 5th century. Left abandoned for over six centuries, it was then resurrected under the watchful eye of Harold Godwinson, Earl of Wessex and future King Harold of England. While subsequent Norman rulers made additions to its structure following their conquest in 1066, Elizabethan times saw Pevensey Castle fall into disrepair. However, even in its dilapidated state depicted here, it exudes an undeniable charm that draws visitors from far and wide. The landscape surrounding this historic fortress is nothing short of enchanting. Nestled amidst East Sussex's picturesque countryside, Pevensey Castle stands as a testament to both Roman ingenuity and medieval resilience. As we gaze upon this monochrome masterpiece from Beautiful Britain; views of our stately homes published by The Werner Company of Chicago in 1894), we are transported through time. This image serves as a reminder that heritage sites like Pevensey Castle continue to captivate tourists with their stories etched within ancient walls—a true treasure for all who appreciate history and travel off beaten paths.
