EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving, created by the renowned Dutch artist Jonas Suyderhoef (1592-1651), showcases a striking portrait of Philip III, King of Spain (1578-1621). Dressed in the elaborate attire of the Baroque era, the monarch dons an ornate neck ruff, adorned with intricate lace and a velvet collar. A velvet doublet, embroidered with gold thread, covers his chest, while a voluminous skirt completes his outfit. The King's facial hair, consisting of a well-groomed moustache and beard, frames his angular face. The portrait is set against a monochrome background, with a garland of flowers and plants entwined around the frame, adding a touch of nature to the image. The etching and engraving technique, a popular art form during the 17th century, is evident in the intricate details of the King's clothing and the delicate rendering of the flowers. Philip III, also known as Felipe III, ruled Spain from 1598 until his death in 1621. He was the last Habsburg king of Spain and the last king of the Spanish Netherlands before they were ceded to the Austrian branch of the Habsburg family. This portrait, a testament to the grandeur and opulence of the Spanish monarchy during the Baroque era, is now housed in the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C.
