EDITORS COMMENTS
In this historic photograph captured by Harris & Ewing on April 28, 1909, Pierre Charles L'Enfant, Major of France, is seen during the dedication of his tomb and memorial at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia, United States. L'Enfant, a French-American military engineer, is best known for designing the basic plan for Washington, D.C. He passed away in poverty in 1825 and was originally buried at the Green Hill farm in Chillum, Prince George's County, Maryland. However, due to the efforts of the French ambassador to the United States, L'Enfant was re-interred in Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors. In the image, L'Enfant stands in front of his newly constructed mausoleum, surrounded by a group of men in military uniforms. Flags wave in the background, adding to the ceremonial atmosphere of the occasion. The men, likely members of the military or dignitaries, pay their respects to the Major of France, who is dressed in a formal suit and hat. Martha Ewing Kuntze, the wife of George W. Ewing, the founder of Harris & Ewing Photographic Studio, also appears in the photograph, standing to the side of L'Enfant. This photograph is an important historical record of the dedication ceremony for Pierre Charles L'Enfant's tomb and memorial at Arlington National Cemetery. It is a testament to the enduring legacy of L'Enfant's contributions to the design of the nation's capital and to the recognition of his achievements by the United States government and the people of France. The image, taken during the early 20th century, is part of the Harris Ewing Collection at the Library of Congress.
