EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the magnificent Pinnacled Tower of the Records Office from Cliffords Inn, captured by Donald McLeish in approximately 1935. The image offers a glimpse into the grandeur of the Public Record Office building located on Chancery Lane in the heart of London's City. Designed by James Pennethorne, this architectural marvel served as home to the national archives of the United Kingdom for over 160 years. Within its walls resided invaluable historical documents like the Doomsday Book, dating back to 1086. From 1838 until its merger with the Historical Manuscripts Commission in 2003, it stood as a guardian of British history and heritage. This iconic structure stands tall amidst an avenue adorned with other remarkable buildings, showcasing Victorian Gothic architecture at its finest. The photo captures not only a piece of London's rich past but also highlights Arthur St John Adcock's compilation "Wonderful London". Published around the same time as this photograph was taken, Adcock's work aimed to celebrate and document various aspects of England's capital city. Donald McLeish skillfully captures both the exterior beauty and neo-Gothic charm that define this historic landmark. As we gaze upon this monochrome masterpiece today, we are transported back to an era when records were meticulously preserved within these hallowed halls—a testament to our enduring fascination with history and our commitment to preserving it for future generations.
