Pipe tile machine, 1844. Creator: Unknown

Pipe tile machine, 1844. Exhibit at the Southampton meeting of the Royal Agricultural Society of England:a compact and simple invention for the manufacture of pipe or D tiles. It consists of a pair of cast-iron cylinders, revolving on a column, which supports the machinery, and is itself secured at top and bottom. A plunger is worked by a rack and pinion, in one (while the other is being filled), which presses out the clay through dies (of brass, and of which there are several sizes) at the bottom.
Price, with six sets of brass dies...and 4 inch pipe, and one for making common D tiles, £ 25. From " Illustrated London News", 1844, Vol V

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable invention from the 19th century - the Pipe Tile Machine of 1844. Created by an unknown inventor, this machine was exhibited at the prestigious Southampton meeting of the Royal Agricultural Society of England. The photograph captures the essence of this compact and simple yet ingenious contraption designed for manufacturing pipe or D tiles. The centerpiece of this mechanism is a pair of cast-iron cylinders mounted on a column, which serves as both support and anchor. As one cylinder fills with clay, a plunger operated by a rack and pinion system presses out the clay through various sizes of brass dies located at its base. The image provides us with an insight into Victorian-era technology during the Industrial Revolution in Britain. The intricate cogs and wheels within this machinery demonstrate how innovation was harnessed to streamline tile production. The engraving featured in "Illustrated London News" in 1844 further highlights its significance during that era. Although we may not know who exactly created this groundbreaking device, it stands as a testament to human ingenuity and technological advancement in manufacturing processes during that time period. This historical artifact offers us glimpses into trade practices prevalent centuries ago while reminding us of our progress since then.
