Pitt, Earl of Chatham; 1766, (1824). Creator: J Chapman
Pitt, Earl of Chatham; 1766, (1824). Portrait of William Pitt, 1st Earl of Chatham (1708-1778), British statesman of the Whig group who led the government of Great Britain twice in the middle of the 18th century. Historians call him Pitt of Chatham, or William Pitt the Elder to distinguish from his son, William Pitt the Younger, who also was a prime minister. Pitt was also known as The Great Commoner, because of his long-standing refusal to accept a title until 1766

EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait print showcases William Pitt, 1st Earl of Chatham, a prominent British statesman who played a significant role in the government of Great Britain during the mid-18th century. Created by J Chapman in 1824, this engraving beautifully captures the essence of Pitt's distinguished presence and political influence. Known as Pitt of Chatham or William Pitt the Elder to differentiate him from his son, William Pitt the Younger (also a prime minister), he earned the moniker "The Great Commoner" due to his principled stance against accepting titles until 1766. This refusal reflected his commitment to representing and advocating for all citizens rather than aligning himself solely with aristocracy. In this oval-shaped portrait, we see Pitt's direct gaze as he looks confidently at the camera. The colorization adds depth and vibrancy to this historical image that transports us back to eighteenth-century England. As one person dominates the frame, it is clear that this print aims to highlight not only Pitt's individuality but also his immense contributions as a politician and statesman. As we admire this piece from The Print Collector collection, we are reminded of an era when politics shaped nations and individuals like William Pitt left an indelible mark on history.
