Ponting Cinematographs The Bow of the Terra Nova, c1910–1913, (1913)

Ponting Cinematographs The Bow of the Terra Nova Breaking Through the Ice-Floes, c1910– 1913, (1913). Camera artist Herbert G Ponting (1870-1935) lies on planks to film the ship. The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. From Scotts Last Expedition, Volume I. [Smith, Elder & Co. London, 1913]

EDITORS COMMENTS
The print titled "Ponting Cinematographs The Bow of the Terra Nova" captures a significant moment during the final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott. Taken between 1910 and 1913 by camera artist Herbert G Ponting, this image showcases his dedication to documenting the journey. In order to capture this shot, Ponting lies on planks, braving harsh conditions to film the ship. Scott's expedition aimed not only to reach the South Pole but also to continue scientific research in Antarctica. The team consisted of various experts, including geologists, zoologists, surgeons, photographers, engineers, ski experts, meteorologists, and physicists. Their goal was ambitious yet noble. However, upon reaching their destination on January 17th, 1912 after enduring blizzards and dwindling supplies along the way; they discovered that Norwegian explorer Amundsen had beaten them by a month. This realization must have been devastating for Scott and his companions: Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers, and Petty Officer Edgar Evans. Tragically delayed by adverse weather conditions and running out of provisions on their return journey; Scott and his remaining team members perished at the end of March. It wasn't until eight months later that their bodies were found alongside their poignant diaries. This photograph is part of "Scotts Last Expedition". Volume I published in London in 1913 by Smith Elder & Co. , providing a visual testament to one of history's most courageous yet ill-fated explorations into Earth's harshest wilderness - Antarctica.
