EDITORS COMMENTS
Raden Saleh's Portrait of the Baud Family in their Country House in Voorburg, 1831-1832, is a captivating glimpse into the lives of the Dutch colonial elite in the Dutch East Indies during the 19th century. The painting depicts the Baud family, including Jean Chretien Baron Baud, the Governor-General of the Dutch East Indies from 1833 to 1836, and his wife and children. Raden Saleh, the first modern artist from Indonesia, painted this family portrait after his return from his studies in Europe. The artist's European training is evident in the use of Western artistic techniques and the fashionable attire of the subjects. The family is depicted indoors, gathered around a doorway adorned with geraniums, a popular flower in the Netherlands at the time. The children, dressed in bloomers and clothing dresses, play with dogs, while the adults engage in leisure activities such as music and reading. The painting offers a glimpse into the opulent lifestyle of the colonial administrators, with the family's elegant apparel and the ornate furnishings in the background. The portrait also serves as a reminder of the complex history of colonialism and imperialism in the region, as well as the cultural exchange that took place between Europe and the Dutch East Indies during this period. The painting is a valuable heritage art piece, showcasing the rich history and cultural diversity of the Dutch East Indies during the 19th century.
