EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking portrait, titled "Portrait of Jacob Hobein, Rescued the Dutch Flag under Enemy Fire, 18 March 1831," was painted by the renowned Dutch artist Jan Willem Pieneman in 1832. The subject of the painting is Jacob Hobein, a brave sailor who distinguished himself during the Belgian Revolution of 1830-31. During the Battle of the Scheldt on 18 March 1831, the Dutch flag was in imminent danger of being captured by the enemy. Hobein, who was part of the Dutch naval forces, took it upon himself to save the flag from certain defeat. He bravely swam through enemy fire to reach the Dutch flagship and retrieved the flag, thereby preserving Dutch honor and morale. In this painting, Hobein is depicted in full military regalia, wearing a black coat and trousers, with a red sash and a military order of William decoration on his chest. He stands tall with his arms folded, gazing off into the distance, seemingly lost in thought. The Dutch flag, which he had so valiantly rescued, is prominently displayed behind him. The painting is an excellent example of the romantic era in Dutch art, with its emphasis on heroism, patriotism, and historic events. The use of oil on canvas and the rich, dark colors adds to the painting's dramatic effect, making it a powerful and evocative representation of Dutch military history. This painting is now a cherished part of the collection at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, where it continues to inspire awe and admiration for the bravery and heroism of Jacob Hobein and the Dutch sailors who fought valiantly to preserve their country's honor during a time of great upheaval.
