Portrait of Jan Pellicorne, c1626. Creator: Cornelis van Poelenburgh
Portrait of Jan Pellicorne, c1626. This delicate, fanciful portrait and its pair were probably made as mementos of the marriage in 1626 of Jan Pellicorne (1597-after 1653) and Susanna van Collen, both from wealthy merchant families. The leopard skin thrown rakishly over his shoulder, his blouse, and the strap (for a quiver) all evoke the romantic, care-free, but strictly imaginary life of ancient Greek shepherds, as popularized by theatrical productions of the time. His carefully dishevelled hair suggests a shepherd, but his neat mustache and goatee mark him as really a gentleman

EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite portrait, titled "Portrait of Jan Pellicorne" by Cornelis van Poelenburgh, dates back to around 1626. The painting is believed to have been commissioned as a memento of the marriage between Jan Pellicorne and Susanna van Collen, both hailing from affluent merchant families. The portrait, along with its pair, showcases a romanticized, carefree image of ancient Greek shepherds, popularized by theatrical productions of the time. Jan Pellicorne is depicted in the portrait wearing a leopard skin casually thrown over his shoulder, a blouse, and a quiver strap. His disheveled hair adds to the shepherd-like appearance, yet his neat mustache and goatee reveal his true identity as a gentleman. The use of a leopard skin was a symbol of wealth and power during this period. The painting is an oil on copper creation, measuring only a few inches in size, and was likely created in the Netherlands. The intricate details and vibrant colors showcase the exceptional skill of Cornelis van Poelenburgh, a renowned Dutch painter of the 17th century. The portrait is currently housed in the Walters Art Museum in the United States and is a testament to the rich artistic heritage of Europe during this period.
