EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking portrait, created by the Dutch painter Adriaen van der Werff in the late 17th or early 18th century, depicts Lieutenant-General Godard van Reede, Lord of Amerongen (1690-1703). Van Reede, also known as Godert de Ginkel, 1st Earl of Athlone and Baron van Reede, Lord of Ginkel, was a prominent aristocrat and military leader in the Dutch Republic during the Baroque era. The portrait showcases Van Reede in a formal attire, standing confidently with his chest puffed out and his arms crossed, clad in an elegant red coat adorned with gold braid and silver buttons, and wearing a black waistcoat and white collar. His armour, complete with a helmet and a sword at his side, adds an air of authority and military prowess. The rich colors and intricate details of the painting reflect the Baroque style of the time, with the use of oil on canvas technique to create a lifelike and textured representation of the subject. Van Reede's portrait is an important piece of heritage art that offers a glimpse into the aristocracy and military culture of the Dutch Republic during the late 17th and early 18th centuries. The painting is currently housed in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, one of the most renowned museums in Europe dedicated to art and cultural history.
