Portrait of a Man, 1845. Creator: Charles Loring Elliott
Portrait of a Man, 1845. This may be a self-portrait of the prolific 19th-century American painter Charles Loring Elliott. In the early 1830s Elliott studied in New York City with John Trumbull and John Quidor. He spent the next decade as an itinerant portraitist, returning to New York around 1845, after which he began to exhibit his work at the National Academy of Design. Within five years he was considered to be the finest portrait painter of his time. Elliott seems to have painted more than seven hundred portraits during his career, but the inscription on this watercolour claims that only one of these was in the medium of watercolour

EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait, titled "Portrait of a Man" by Charles Loring Elliott, dates back to 1845. The identity of the man depicted remains uncertain, but it is believed that this could be a self-portrait of the renowned 19th-century American painter. Elliott began his artistic studies in New York City under the tutelage of John Trumbull and John Quidor in the early 1830s. He spent the following decade traveling as an itinerant portraitist before returning to New York around 1845. It was during this period that Elliott's work started to gain recognition, and he became known as the finest portrait painter of his time. Elliott is recorded to have painted over seven hundred portraits throughout his career, but this watercolor is one of the rare exceptions. The inscription on the image claims that only one of his portraits was executed in watercolor. Elliott's mastery of the medium is evident in the intricate details of the man's apparel, which includes a grey jacket and waistcoat, and the subtle textures of his grey beard and hair. The man in the portrait is shown looking away, adding an air of mystery and introspection to the image. This evocative portrait is a testament to Elliott's remarkable talent and his significant contribution to American art during the 1840s. The Walters Art Museum in Baltimore, Maryland, is the current custodian of this precious work, which continues to captivate viewers with its exquisite detail and timeless allure.
