EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning full-length portrait captures Marie de Medici, Queen of France, in her regal attire of state around the year 1610. Painted by Frans Pourbus the Younger during the Baroque era, the painting showcases the grandeur and opulence of the Queen's wardrobe. The Queen is depicted wearing a richly decorated gown, adorned with intricate gold and silver embroidery, and a magnificent canopy or baldachin, supported by four elegantly dressed figures, creates a sense of majesty and awe. The ciborium or ciborium canopy above her head further emphasizes her royal status. Marie de Medici, born in Florence, Italy, was the daughter of the powerful Grand Duke of Tuscany, Cosimo II de' Medici. She was married to King Henry IV of France in 1600, becoming the Queen Consort of France. The portrait reflects her Italian heritage, as well as the fusion of Italian and French artistic influences prevalent during this period. The painting is an oil on canvas masterpiece, measuring approximately 143.5 x 105.5 cm, and is currently housed at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, Netherlands. The intricate details and vivid colors of the painting transport us back to the 17th century, allowing us to witness the splendor and grandeur of the royal court.
