EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait depicts Marie-Thérèse of Austria (1638-1683), the Queen of France, during her reign in the late 17th century. The painting, created around 1670, is an oil on canvas masterpiece of unknown origin, now housed in the Musée Carnavalet in Paris. Marie-Thérèse, also known as Maria Theresa of Spain or Marie Therese d'Autriche, was the Infanta of Spain and a member of the House of Habsburg. She was the daughter of Philip IV of Spain and his fourth wife, Isabel de Borbon. In 1660, she married Louis XIV of France, becoming the Queen of France and the mother of the future King Louis XV. The portrait shows Marie-Thérèse in an elegant oval-shaped frame, dressed in the fashionable clothing of the time. She wears a richly decorated, off-the-shoulder gown, adorned with intricate lace and embroidery. Her hair is styled in large ringlets, a popular hairstyle of the era, and she holds a single carnation in her hand, a symbol of the Catholic faith and the Virgin Mary. The painting reflects the opulence and grandeur of the French court during the Ancien Régime. Marie-Thérèse's regal bearing and serene expression convey her status as a powerful and influential monarch. The portrait is a testament to the rich artistic and cultural heritage of the 17th century, and a reminder of the complex and fascinating history of Europe during this period.
