EDITORS COMMENTS
This image is a portrait medallion of the renowned German poet and philosopher, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, taken from the title page of the 1828 edition of his magnum opus, Faust. The portrait was created as a collaboration between two renowned French artists, Achille Deveria and Eugène Delacroix. Deveria, a skilled draftsman and lithographer, is responsible for the meticulously detailed portrait of Goethe. The image shows Goethe in profile, with a thoughtful expression and a touch of melancholy in his eyes. The background is a simple, monochromatic mausoleum, symbolizing the passage of time and the inevitability of death. Delacroix, a leading figure of the French Romantic artistic school, contributed the allegorical figures that surround Goethe. The most prominent figure is an owl, a symbol of wisdom and knowledge, perched on a branch above Goethe's head. Birds of prey, representing the power and freedom of the human spirit, fly above the mausoleum. The title page was published in black and white, with Deveria's portrait in lithograph on light pink wove paper. The contrast between the black and white tones adds to the dramatic effect of the image, enhancing the sense of tragedy and the tragic heroism of Goethe's character in Faust. This stunning portrait medallion is a testament to the enduring legacy of Goethe and the artistic collaboration between two of the greatest artists of their time. It is now part of the permanent collection of the Art Institute of Chicago, where it continues to inspire and captivate visitors from around the world.
