EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait, attributed to Jacques Lebrun, is believed to depict the Marquis and Marquise de Beauharnais, François Victor de Beauharnais and Marie Anne Henriette Pyvart de Chastillon, respectively. The Marquis, a French aristocrat and soldier, gained prominence during the colonial era, serving as the Governor of Saint-Domingue (present-day Haiti) between 1801 and 1802. The Marquise, also known as Chastille Henriette Pyvart de Chastillon, was the Marquis' wife and a noblewoman in her own right. The circular painting, executed in oil on ivory, showcases the couple in formal attire, with the Marquis wearing a military uniform adorned with medals and the Marquise dressed in an elegant gown. Both figures gaze directly at the viewer, creating an intimate and engaging connection. The Marquis' hand rests on a sword, signifying his military prowess, while the Marquise wears a pendant necklace, adding a touch of elegance and femininity to the composition. This portrait, now housed in the Musée Cognacq-Jay in Paris, is a testament to the partnership between these two historic figures and the rich heritage of French aristocracy during the 19th century. The direct gaze of the subjects and the circular shape of the painting add to the intrigue and allure of this work of art.
