This portrait, attributed to Jacques Lebrun, is believed to depict the Marquis and Marquise de Beauharnais, François Victor de Beauharnais and Marie Anne Henriette Pyvart de Chastillon, respectively. The Marquis, a French aristocrat and soldier, gained prominence during the colonial era, serving as the Governor of Saint-Domingue (present-day Haiti) between 1801 and 1802. The Marquise, also known as Chastille Henriette Pyvart de Chastillon, was the Marquis' wife and a noblewoman in her own right. The circular painting, executed in oil on ivory, showcases the couple in formal attire, with the Marquis wearing a military uniform adorned with medals and the Marquise dressed in an elegant gown. Both figures gaze directly at the viewer, creating an intimate and engaging connection.
