"Prayer Wheel" in Cashmere, 1857. Creator: Unknown. "Prayer Wheel" in Cashmere, 1857. Creator: Unknown

"Prayer Wheel" in Cashmere, 1857....the interior of a Lama Temple, with a prayer-wheel at work. These wheels are about ten feet high by eight or ten in diameter, made of large rolls of cloth, on which the Lama faith is written, and inclosed in a wooden case painted all over with facetious and not very correct representations of gods, devils, &c. They turn on a pivot, and are pulled round by a strap in the manner represented; the Lamas fancying themselves on the high road to heaven all the time, pulling day and night, and not having time in consequence to wash'. EDITORS COMMENTS
Prayer Wheel" in Cashmere, 1857: A Glimpse into the Devotional Practices of a Lama Temple This image, taken from the pages of the "Illustrated London News" in 1857, offers a rare glimpse into the interior of a Lama temple in Cashmere, India. The photograph features a large, wooden prayer wheel, approximately ten feet high and eight to ten feet in diameter, which is in use. The prayer wheel, a significant symbol of Tibetan Buddhism and prevalent in the Ladakh region of India, is made of large rolls of cloth on which the Lama faith is inscribed. The cloth is enclosed within a wooden case, intricately painted with colorful and somewhat fanciful depictions of gods, devils, and other religious motifs. The prayer wheel is designed to turn on a pivot and is pulled around by a strap. According to the description in the "Illustrated London News," the Lamas believe they are on the path to heaven while turning the wheel day and night, and they do not have time for other worldly tasks, such as washing. The image provides a fascinating window into the devotional practices of the Lama faith and the intricate details of their religious art. The prayer wheel, with its mesmerizing rotation and the sound of the bell that accompanies each turn, is a powerful symbol of the deep spiritual connection between the Lamas and their faith. This photograph, taken over a century and a half ago, continues to captivate and inspire, offering a glimpse into a rich and complex religious tradition that remains an integral part of the cultural heritage of the Ladakh region and beyond.
