The Prince of Wales at the Apposition of St. Paul's School, on Wednesday, June 15, 1864. Creator: Mason Jackson

The Prince of Wales at the Apposition of St. Paul's School, on Wednesday, June 15, 1864. 'The public distribution of prizes and recital of speeches at St. Paul's School [in London] was honoured with the presence of the Prince of Wales (future King Edward VII). His Royal Highness, accompanied by the Earl of Mount-Edgcumbe, General Knollys, and Colonel Keppel...[was] received by the High Master, the Rev. Dr. Kynaston, and by the Master and Wardens of the Mercers' Company...When the Prince entered he was loudly cheered by the boys and men; the ladies, too, rose in token of welcome. He was conducted to a magnificent chair of state...The proceedings opened with the recital of an English version of an ode in commemoration of the founder, written by Dr. Kynaston...[After the prize-giving, the] Prince asked a holiday for the boys, but was told that, by the ancient laws of the school, this boon could only be granted at the request of the reigning Sovereign, or of some one of the Bishops; whereupon the seven right reverend prelates in company, by the mouthpiece of the Archbishop of York, claimed each his day, and so obtained for the school a vacation of an entire week'. A Royal Presence - The Prince of Wales at St. Paul's School

EDITORS COMMENTS
On June 15, 1864, a momentous occasion took place at St. Paul's School in London as His Royal Highness, the future King Edward VII (then known as the Prince of Wales), graced the institution with his presence. Accompanied by esteemed guests including Earl Mount-Edgcumbe and General Knollys, Colonel Keppel, and other notable figures, the Prince was warmly received by school officials and attendees alike. As he entered the hall, a thunderous applause erupted from both boys and men in attendance. The ladies present also rose to their feet as a mark of respect for His Royal Highness. Seated majestically in his chair of state, the Prince listened intently as Dr. Kynaston recited an ode commemorating the school's founder. Following the prize-giving ceremony, the Prince made a lighthearted request: granting a holiday to the boys. However, he was informed that this privilege could only be bestowed upon them by either their reigning Sovereign or one of seven esteemed Bishops in attendance. In response, each Bishop claimed his own "day" and collectively secured an entire week's vacation for the school. This extraordinary event is captured beautifully in a photograph taken by Mason Jackson, offering us a glimpse into the grandeur and pomp that surrounded this royal visit to St. Paul's School on that memorable day in June 1864.
