EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative sketch by C.R captures a historic moment in 1876 as HRH The Prince of Wales, later King Edward VII, arrives at Gibraltar during his return journey from a royal visit to India. The future monarch is warmly greeted by his brother, Arthur, Duke of Connaught and Strathearn, who stands at the quay in full military regalia, complete with bicorne hat adorned with ostrich plumes and a sword at his side. The Prince is seen gesturing in a friendly manner, while the Duke extends a hand in welcome. Surrounded by a crowd of dignitaries, colonial officials, and military personnel, the brothers exchange pleasantries amidst a flurry of activity. The Acting Governor and staff, officers of the garrison and those of the Royal Navy, all join in the welcoming committee. A guard of honour is drawn up on the quay, and flowers are strewn in the path of the Prince. This full-length illustration, published in the Illustrated London News, captures the grandeur and pageantry of the British Empire during the 19th century, with the Prince and Duke dressed in their finest apparel, and the vibrant colors of their uniforms and feathers adding to the visual appeal.
