The Prince of Wales in the Nepaul Terai: Colonel Sir Arthur Ellis...with a Tiger...1876. Creator: Unknown
The Prince of Wales in the Nepaul Terai: Colonel Sir Arthur Ellis at close quarters with a Tiger, from a sketch by one of our special artists, 1876....the tiger sprang out, and in an instant charged the nearest elephant...The tiger was shaken off...but in another moment with a loud growl he violently charged Colonel Ellis's elephant, fastening himself on the animal's head, with his right paw clawing the elephant's forehead, and holding on by his teeth to the...seat, on which the mahout sits; he bit the man's knee, while with his left paw he clawed the elephant's ear severely, and at the same time the mahout's ankle. The elephant swerved...vainly endeavouring to shake off his adversary; but a shot from Colonel Ellis, who was able to lean over from the howdah, and to fire within a foot or so of the tiger's head, sent him staggering to the ground, and a second shot was unnecessary, as he lay quite dead'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken in 1876, depicts Colonel Sir Arthur Ellis of the British Army in a thrilling encounter with a tiger in the Nepal Terai region. The image, created from a sketch by an unknown special artist for the Illustrated London News, captures the raw intensity and danger of colonial-era wildlife exploration. The scene unfolds as Colonel Ellis, mounted on an elephant, comes face to face with the powerful predator. In an instant, the tiger springs out, charging the nearest elephant. The tiger's attack is fierce, as he latches onto the animal's head with his right paw, clawing the elephant's forehead, and biting the mahout's knee with his left. The elephant, in a desperate attempt to free itself, swerves, but the tiger's grip remains firm. Colonel Ellis, quick on the draw, leans over from the howdah and fires a shot within a foot of the tiger's head, sending him reeling to the ground. A second shot is unnecessary, as the tiger lies still, dead. This encounter, recounted in the Illustrated London News, highlights the bravery and skill of Colonel Ellis in the face of danger and the inherent risks of exploring the wilds of Nepal during the colonial era. The photograph is a testament to the thrill and adventure of the past, providing a glimpse into a time when man and beast came face to face in the untamed wilderness.
