EDITORS COMMENTS
In this image, His Royal Highness, The Prince of Wales, Edward VII, engages in the ceremonial hammering of the last bolt on the Alexandra Railway Bridge in the Punjab region of India, 1876. The future King of Great Britain and Ireland, dressed in the blue undress uniform of a Field Marshal, gestures with confidence as he strikes the iron bolt with a hammer, signifying the completion of this engineering marvel. The bridge, spanning the Chenab River, was a symbol of British colonial power and the benefits of their rule in the region. After this ceremonial act, The Prince entered a special train that crossed and re-crossed the bridge. The hammer used for the occasion was presented to him in a casket adorned with a Persian inscription, acknowledging the utility of the bridge and the advantages of British presence in the Punjab. The event was attended by a grand gathering of around three hundred guests, who partook of lunch in a banquet hall at the Wazirabad station. This photograph, taken from a sketch by a special artist for the Illustrated London News, captures the essence of imperialism and the spirit of the 19th century, where civil engineering projects were celebrated as symbols of progress and British dominance.
