Princely ascetic in the forest visited by ladies, c. 1760. Creator: Unknown
Princely ascetic in the forest visited by ladies, c. 1760. At first glance a group of court women has gathered to visit a prince who abandoned the palace to practice yoga, as indicated by the strap around the knees of the figure seated at the right. Upon close inspection, however, the prince is being " played" by a woman dressed for the part. All the components of a pleasurable courtly Mughal gathering are present. A sumptuous carpet, bottles of alcohol, fruit, a hookah, breath-freshening paan, and a woman playing a vina have been set up in the forest as if in the palace

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photo print, titled "Princely ascetic in the forest visited by ladies" transports us to a mesmerizing scene set in 18th century India. At first glance, we witness a group of courtly women gathering amidst nature to pay homage to a prince who has renounced his royal life for spiritual pursuits. The figure seated on the right, adorned with a strap around their knees symbolizing yogic practice, appears to be the prince himself. However, upon closer inspection, we discover an intriguing twist - the role of the prince is being ingeniously portrayed by a woman dressed convincingly as him. This unexpected revelation adds an element of surprise and playfulness to this otherwise serene setting. The painting beautifully captures all the elements that define an opulent Mughal gathering. A luxurious carpet is spread out on the forest floor, creating an exquisite space for indulgence and relaxation. Bottles of alcohol stand ready for enjoyment alongside platters of luscious fruits. A hookah emits fragrant smoke while paan leaves promise breath-freshening delights. Adding melodic charm to this enchanting ambiance is a woman gracefully playing a vina instrument. Together, these components create an illusionary palace within nature's embrace. Preserved at The Cleveland Museum of Art and brought back to life through opaque watercolor and gold on paper technique by unknown artists from Lucknow during that era; this artwork offers us glimpses into both courtly pleasures and artistic mastery prevalent in 18th century India
