EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative illustration, created by Dutch artist Charles Rochussen in 1867, depicts Princess Elisabeth of France in her prison cell on May 10, 1794, during the French Revolution. Elisabeth Philippine Marie Hélène, also known as Madame Elisabeth, was the sister of King Louis XVI and Queen Marie Antoinette. After the royal family's arrest and imprisonment, Elisabeth was held in the Conciergerie prison in Paris. The scene is set in a dimly lit cell, with Elisabeth seated on a simple wooden stool, her hands folded in her lap. A male guard stands nearby, watching her intently as another man, possibly a barber, approaches her with a pair of scissors. The princess's long, flowing hair is being cut, a humiliating and degrading act often inflicted upon female prisoners. The artist masterfully captures the emotional turmoil and despair on Elisabeth's face, as she endures this indignity with quiet dignity. This illustration is a poignant reminder of the turbulent times of the French Revolution and the suffering endured by the royal family and their supporters. It is also a testament to the power of art to preserve history and evoke empathy and emotion. The illustration was created using pencil, pen, and paper, and is now a cherished part of the collection at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. The intricate details and skillful use of color and shading bring the scene to life, transporting us back in time to witness a moment in history that continues to fascinate and inspire.
