Prize dogs from the exhibition at the Agricultural Hall, Islington, 1862. 'All sizes of dogs [upwards of 800 specimens] were represented...beginning at the top...[is] Canaradzo, the winner of the Waterloo Cup...When you look over him from behind he is very beautiful, but hardly so when you come before him...Sampler and Java both showed well in the other greyhound classes...The next portrait represents a Scotch deerhound, Vengeance...The Skyes, of which we engrave the winner, Tyro...was a good and a very large class...The winning King Charles spaniel (over 7lb.), "Jumbo," was the property of Mr. Woolmington...and a good specimen of his breed, as was Mr. Mandeville's first prize Maltese, "Fido"...Capt. Palmer's boarhound was the largest specimen in the exhibition; and the prize for the best fox terrier was awarded to one belonging to Mr. J. H. D. Bayley...The extra class...had some fifty-four specimens, and of these we have selected Mrs. Warner's Tiny, Mr. Sleigh's Peruvian poodle, Mr. Pearson's Egyptian dog Aegil...Mr. Appleby's Tartary dog Yep...and Mr. Riley's Snow...[There were also] five or six from "the Summer Palace at Pekin"...We are glad to find that Sir Edwin Landseer has made a protest against ear-cropping in future exhibitions'. This stunning photograph print captures a moment in time when the world's most esteemed canine breeds gathered to compete for top honors. The exhibition at the Agricultural Hall in Islington, London, showcased over 800 specimens from around the globe. Atop this magnificent display stands Canaradzo, winner of the Waterloo Cup - his regal presence commanding attention.
As we gaze upon these prize dogs, we're treated to a diverse array of breeds and sizes. There's Vengeance, the majestic Scotch deerhound; Tyro, the champion Skye terrier; Jumbo, the impressive King Charles spaniel weighing in at over 7lbs.; Fido, Mr. Mandeville's first-prize Maltese companion; and many more.
This remarkable gathering also featured a special class with fifty-four specimens from far-flung lands like Peru and Egypt - including Mrs. Warner's diminutive Tiny, Peruvian poodle by Mr. Sleigh, Egyptian dog Aegil courtesy of Mr. Pearson, Tartary dog Yep owned by Mr. Appleby, and Snow belonging to Mr. Riley.
Notably absent are the ear-cropped specimens that would have been commonplace in earlier exhibitions - thanks to Sir Edwin Landseer's protest against this practice for future events.
