Prize donkeys and mule at the Show in the Agricultural Hall, Islington, 1864. Creator: Unknown
Prize donkeys and mule at the Show in the Agricultural Hall, Islington, 1864. We present an Illustration of the mule and donkey show...The object of its promoters was especially to recommend an improvement in the treatment and condition of that much-abused beast of burden, which is too commonly found in the possession of cruel or careless owners among a portion of the working classes in town or country. The movement was under the patronage of the Prince of Wales, Earl Clarendon (both of whom were exhibitors of animals), Miss Burdett Coutts, [and] Mr. Samuel Gumey, M.P...the prizes were distributed by the Rev. T. Jackson, who briefly addressed the recipients on the subject of cruelty to animals...The three animals represented in our Engraving, which is from a sketch by Mr. B. Hering, are as follow: No. 1, "The Stag, " a mule, aged five years, belonging to Daniel Sykes, Esq. of Pinner Park farm, Middlesex. No. 2, "Snowball, " a donkey, aged five years, belonging to Lady V. Cecil, Burghley House, Stamford. No. 3, a beautiful white Egyptian donkey, presented by the Pacha of Egypt to the Prince of Wales, for the use of the infant Prince'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the scene at the Prize Donkeys and Mule Show held at the Agricultural Hall in Islington in 1864. The image showcases three magnificent animals - "The Stag," a five-year-old mule owned by Daniel Sykes, "Snowball," a five-year-old donkey belonging to Lady V. Cecil, and a stunning white Egyptian donkey gifted to the Prince of Wales by the Pacha of Egypt.
The show aimed to promote better treatment and care for these hardworking beasts of burden, often mistreated by their owners. Under the patronage of esteemed figures such as the Prince of Wales and Earl Clarendon, prizes were awarded to highlight exemplary animal husbandry practices.
In this historical snapshot, we see not just prize-winning animals but also a movement towards greater compassion for creatures that have long been subjected to cruelty and neglect. The Rev. T. Jackson's address on animal welfare underscores the importance of kindness towards all living beings.
Through this image, we are transported back in time to witness an important moment in advocating for improved conditions for working animals—a reminder that even centuries ago, efforts were made to protect those who could not speak up for themselves.
