EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph depicts the grand Procession to the Laying of the Foundation Stone of the New Church of St. Thomas in Newport, Isle of Wight, in 1854. The Masonic fraternity played a significant role in this historic event, with over 400 members marching in procession to lend their support. The streets were adorned with flags, banners, and an abundance of flowers, creating a festive atmosphere. Triumphal arches, displaying tasteful designs and arrangements, were erected at various points along the route. Just outside the gate of the church stood the Clerical Arch, proudly displaying the arms of the See of Winchester. The new church, designed in the Florid style, was the vision of architect Mr. S. W. Dawkins of Whitehall-place, London, and the construction was entrusted to Messrs. Dashwood of Ryde. The anticipation and excitement of this momentous occasion were palpable, as the community came together to witness the beginning of the construction of their new place of worship.
