Progress of the Prince of Wales in Canada - view of part of the city and river of Ottawa... 1860. Creator: Unknown

Progress of the Prince of Wales in Canada - view of part of the city and river of Ottowa, from the Barrack Hill, the site of the new Parliament Buildings - from a sketch by our special artist, G. H. Andrews, 1860. Taking a bird's-eye view of the valley of the Ottawa, we see spread out before us a country equal to ten times the extent of Massachusetts, with its great artery the Ottawa curving through it...At the western extremity of the city are the celebrated Chaudiere Falls, a scene of imposing grandeur...A suspension-bridge...spans this foaming chasm, and unites Upper with Lower Canada...the scenery around the city is of unsurpassed beauty - wild, romantic, and picturesque...The commerce of Ottawa is constituted almost wholly of lumber, both square and sawn, which passes through the city from the forests in the rear...The future of Ottawa it is not difficult to foresee. Situated in the centre of a fertile and rapidly-developing country; holding, as it were, the key of the lumber trade; possessing inexhaustible water power...it is destined...to become a place of important manufacturing operations; and, in the event of the Ottawa and Georgian Bay Ship Canal being carried into effect, it will stand on the great water highway to the west'. From "Illustrated London News", 1860

Progress of the Prince of Wales in Canada - View of Part of the City and River of Ottawa, 1860

EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating photographic print showcasing a bird's-eye perspective of the city of Ottawa and the Ottawa River. The scene is captured from Barrack Hill, the site of the new Parliament Buildings, offering an expansive view of the valley, which is said to be ten times the size of Massachusetts. At the western extremity of the city lies the renowned Chaudiere Falls, an awe-inspiring sight of imposing grandeur. A suspension bridge spans the foaming chasm, connecting Upper and Lower Canada. The scenery surrounding the city is of unsurpassed beauty, wild, romantic, and picturesque, with the Ottawa River curving through it. The city of Ottawa holds significant importance due to its strategic location in a fertile and rapidly developing country. Its commerce is primarily driven by the lumber trade, with both square and sawn lumber passing through the city from the forests in the rear. The future of Ottawa is promising, as it holds the key to the lumber trade and possesses inexhaustible water power. With its potential for important manufacturing operations and the possibility of the Ottawa and Georgian Bay Ship Canal being carried into effect, Ottawa is destined to become a significant hub on the great water highway to the west. This photographic print, created by an unknown artist named G.H. Andrews for the Illustrated London News in 1860, offers a glimpse into the past, showcasing the beauty and potential of Ottawa during its early development. The image is a testament to the power of nature and the ingenuity of man, as they come together to shape a thriving community.
