Publication of a War "Gazette" Extraordinary, at the office, St. Martin's Lane, 1854. London crowds wait for news of the Battle of Inkerman. Notwithstanding the careful revision of the lists of "killed and wounded, " despatches are usually published within three hours of their arrival..."Who are the killed?" "Who are the wounded?" were the constant questions when, on the 22nd [November], the official list of the Battle of Inkerman found its way, soon after twelve o'clock, among the dense crowd which...blocked up the roadway in front of the offices of the London Gazette...the strong will and the stronger hearts of a fearing, hopeful mass knew no control. It was a firm, strong, and sometimes silent pressure towards the doors - strong men in front, and behind crowds of women and children. A few moments the truth would be known, and their sorrow or relief be made complete'. From "Illustrated London News", 1854

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this intriguing photograph, a bustling crowd gathers outside the offices of the London Gazette in St. Martin's Lane, London, in 1854. The anticipation in the air is palpable as people from all walks of life eagerly await the publication of an extraordinary edition of the War Gazette. The Battle of Inkerman, a significant engagement during the Crimean War, had taken place just days prior, and the public's anxiety for news of the casualties was at an all-time high. The cacophony of voices in the crowd can be imagined, asking, "Who are the killed? Who are the wounded?" The image captures the raw emotion and intensity of the moment, as the strong will and determination of the crowd presses against the doors, with men at the forefront, and women and children behind. Despite the dense crowd and the pressing need for information, the Gazette's lists of casualties were usually published within three hours of their arrival. The truth would soon be known, and the relief or sorrow of the crowd would be made complete. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the power of news and the human desire for information, particularly during times of war and uncertainty. The identity of the photographer remains unknown, but their image has captured a moment in history that continues to resonate with us today.
