The railway works at Blackfriars and opening towards Ludgate Hill...from the temporary bridge, 1864. Creator: Mason Jackson
The railway works at Blackfriars and opening towards Ludgate Hill, viewed from the temporary bridge, [London], 1864. View '...overlooking, on its eastern side, the permanent railway-bridge which the London, Chatham, and Dover Company are erecting, to bring their line south of the Thames - now open to the Elephant and Castle - into connection with its projected City terminus at Ludgate-hill...a great many houses have been cleared away...The facade and majestic dome of St. Paul's were never seen to better advantage than from this new point of observation, since the removal of some of the intervening houses which concealed the portico when the spectator was upon old Blackfriars Bridge. The spire of St. Martin's, Ludgate, and the small square tower of St. Benet's, which was built by Wren, are included in this View...To the right hand we see the bank of the river just above Purfleet Wharf. This View exhibits some features of old and new London in curious juxtaposition, and it is an illustration of the progress of one of the greatest -works of railway construction in this City'. EDITORS COMMENTS
**A Glimpse into Victorian Era's Railway Revolution**
In this photograph, taken by Mason Jackson in 1864, we gaze upon a pivotal moment in London's history - the construction of Blackfriars railway works and its opening towards Ludgate Hill. The vantage point is from the temporary bridge, offering an unobstructed view of the city's transformation.
As we look out over the Thames River, we see on one side the permanent railway-bridge being built by the London, Chatham, and Dover Company to connect their line south of the river with its projected City terminus at Ludgate Hill. The Elephant and Castle station has already been opened, marking a significant milestone in this ambitious project.
The photograph also provides an opportunity to admire some of London's iconic landmarks from a new perspective. St Paul's majestic dome rises majestically into the sky, while the spire of St Martin's, Ludgate, and the small square tower of St Benet's come into view. The riverbank above Purfleet Wharf stretches out to our right.
This image is more than just a snapshot - it represents London in transition. Old buildings have been cleared away to make way for progress, revealing new vistas like this one that juxtaposes old and new elements so harmoniously. It serves as an illustration of the remarkable achievements made possible by railway construction during this era.
