EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph print, published in the Illustrated London News in 1860, features Ralph Farnham, a remarkable figure from the American Revolution. Born in Lebanon, Maine, in 1756, Farnham was just 19 years old when he joined the American Army in May 1775. His bravery was first showcased during the Battle of Bunker Hill on June 17 of the same year, making him one of the few survivors from that pivotal engagement. At the age of 104, Farnham was introduced to the Prince of Wales during the latter's visit to Boston. The encounter, reportedly, was filled with intrigue and fascination. Accompanied by one of his elderly daughters, Farnham shared his firsthand experiences of the American Revolution with the future King Edward VII. The photograph captures the essence of a bygone era, with Farnham's weathered face and the solemn expression on his face, reflecting the wisdom and experiences of a lifetime. The image, reminiscent of the 18th and 19th centuries, adds to the historical significance of this portrait. Farnham's military career extended beyond the Battle of Bunker Hill, as he was also present during the surrender of Burgoyne. His story is a testament to the courage and resilience of the men and women who played a crucial role in the American War of Independence, from 1775 to 1783. This photograph print, a precious piece of history, serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made during a time of rebellion and revolution.
