Ramapo River, 1874. Creator: A. Measom

Ramapo River, 1874. View of the Ramapo, a tributary of the Pompton River, northern New Jersey, USA....the Ramapo offers many attractions. The stream, in its numerous curves, constantly presents fresh points of view. The hills - sometimes abrupt, sometimes rolling - here and there recede from the rivers edge, leaving grassy fields or rocky plateaus, on either of which it is a pleasure to stroll...The sails on the river add to the variety of the scene; the fishermans row-boat imparts to it notable life and vivacity; and the wreathed smoke of the locomotive does not seem wholly inharmonious. In fact, the railroad-train has become quite a prominent incident in our river-scenery. Railroads naturally follow the river-courses, and they give to the wildest and most unfrequented valleys a touch of human life and interest which greatly adds to the effect of mountain solitudes. From " Picturesque America; or, The Land We Live In, A Delineation by Pen and Pencil of the Mountains, Rivers, Lakes...with Illustrations on Steel and Wood by Eminent American Artists" Vol. II, edited by William Cullen Bryant. [D. Appleton and Company, New York, 1874]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Ramapo River, 1874" captures the beauty and allure of the Ramapo River, a tributary of the Pompton River in northern New Jersey, USA. Taken by A. Measom, this image showcases the river's many attractions that have drawn people to its banks for generations. The meandering curves of the Ramapo offer ever-changing perspectives as it winds through the landscape. The surrounding hills, with their varying terrain - sometimes steep and abrupt, other times gentle and rolling - create a picturesque backdrop against which nature unfolds its wonders. Grassy fields and rocky plateaus invite leisurely strolls along the river's edge. Adding to this scenic tapestry are sails gracefully gliding on the water's surface and fishermen rowing their boats with enthusiasm. Even the wreathed smoke from passing locomotives seems to find harmony within this idyllic setting. In fact, railways have become an integral part of our river-scenery; they follow natural courses like rivers themselves do, breathing life into even remote valleys and enhancing mountain solitudes with human presence. This photograph is a testament to America's love affair with its landscapes during the late 19th century when exploration was at its peak. It comes from "Picturesque America; or, The Land We Live In" edited by William Cullen Bryant in 1874. Through skilled penmanship and artistic illustrations on steel and wood by eminent American artists of that era, this volume sought to capture not only nature's grandeur but also humanity's imprint upon it. A true treasure from yesteryears preserved by Heritage Images for all admirers of history and natural beauty alike.
