Reception of Her Majesty at Berwick-Upon-Tweed, 1850. Queen Victoria travels north by train. A triumphal arch was erected at the north end of the bridge: its extreme height was 55 feet from the level of the rails, and 22 feet wide; it was surmounted by an entablature, with a richly-decorated frieze...Beneath the arch was placed the emblem of the Union; on the abutments were the arms of York, Newcastle, Berwick, and Edinburgh, on shields, surrounded by Grecian ornaments: from the arch were suspended large banners; the whole being surmounted by the Royal arms of England powerfully painted in imitation of statuary. Conspicuous amongst the mottoes was "The last act of the Union." Encircling the columns were "God save the Queen and Prince Albert, " and "God save the Royal Family". EDITORS COMMENTS
Reception of Her Majesty at Berwick-Upon-Tweed, 1850: A Triumphant Union of Monarch and People This evocative print by Ebenezer Landells captures the moment of Queen Victoria's arrival at Berwick-Upon-Tweed in Northumberland, England, in 1850. The monarch, accompanied by her entourage, traveled north by train, marking the last act of the Union between England and Scotland. Upon her arrival, a grand arch was erected at the north end of the bridge, reaching an impressive height of 55 feet from the train tracks and 22 feet in width. The arch was adorned with an entablature, richly decorated frieze, and the Royal arms of England, surrounded by Grecian ornaments. Beneath the arch, the emblem of the Union was proudly displayed, with the motto 'The last act of the Union.' Surrounding the columns were the patriotic phrases 'God save the Queen' and 'God save the Royal Family.' The archway was a testament to the unity and pride of the British people, welcoming their sovereign with open arms. The print depicts the Queen's arrival in a horse-drawn carriage, flanked by her soldiers and an excited crowd. The scene is a metaphor for the enduring bond between the monarchy and the people, as well as the power of the press to document and preserve historical moments. This engraving, originally published in the Illustrated London News, is a poignant reminder of the patriotism and pageantry that accompanied Queen Victoria's reign as Empress of India and Queen of Great Britain and Ireland. The print stands as a testament to the enduring power of historical records and the significance of royal visits in shaping the narrative of a nation.
