Relieving Guard at The Vatican, 1864. France says to Italy: You mustn t let nobody outside annoy the Party inside; and you musn t let the Party inside annoy nobody Outside. In mid-September 1864 a convention was concluded between France and Italy, under the terms of which Napoleon (shown on the right) agreed to withdraw French troops from the Papal States. Italy, in turn, agreed not to make any attack on the present territory of the Pope. Here, then, Pope Pius IX eavesdrops in the background, whilst France and Italy change guard. EDITORS COMMENTS
The print titled "Relieving Guard at The Vatican, 1864" captures a significant moment in history between France and Italy. In this satirical cartoon by artist John Tenniel, we see the political dynamics of the time unfold before our eyes. The scene depicts France and Italy changing guard while Pope Pius IX eavesdrops in the background. In mid-September 1864, a convention was established between France and Italy. Under its terms, Napoleon Bonaparte III agreed to withdraw French troops from the Papal States, while Italy pledged not to attack any present territory belonging to the Pope. This agreement aimed to maintain peace and stability within Catholicism. The image showcases an intriguing blend of politics, religion, and military symbolism. Dressed in their respective uniforms, France advises Italy on maintaining order both inside and outside the Vatican walls. The presence of weaponry emphasizes the potential for conflict if these agreements were violated. John Tenniel's caricature style adds a touch of satire to this historical moment. His attention to detail is evident in capturing facial expressions such as Napoleon's mustache or Pope Pius IX listening intently from afar. This print serves as a reminder of how international relations can shape religious institutions' fate during times of change. It stands as a testament to diplomacy's power even amidst complex political landscapes - all beautifully depicted through Tenniel's artistic lens.
