Remains of the Pavilion Theatre, after the Fire, 1856. Creator: Unknown
Remains of the Pavilion Theatre, after the Fire, 1856. Theatre in east London....the firemen went to work in an admirable manner; and, by conveying the hose through the different entrances to the theatre...the brigade were enabled to throw the water in the right direction; but, notwithstanding, the work of devastation continued, and in less than half an hour after the first appearance of the fire the flames had seized upon the pit, and also the boxes and proscenium. To stop the fire at those places the firemen exerted themselves to the utmost, but, unfortunately, without the least success...By six o'clock in the evening the fireman succeeded in getting the ruins sufficiently cooled to allow an inspection to be made; but so extensively was everything within the walls burned that it was impossible to tell how, or even in what part of the theatre, the fire commenced'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the aftermath of the devastating fire that consumed the Pavilion Theatre in east London in 1856. The photograph, taken in the aftermath of the blaze, reveals the charred remains of the once grand theatre, with its ornate facade reduced to smoldering ruins. The fire, which broke out in the early hours of the morning, quickly spread throughout the building, leaving the firemen with an uphill battle to contain it. Despite their valiant efforts, the flames continued to consume the theatre, ultimately reaching the pit, the boxes, and the proscenium. The firemen worked tirelessly to stop the fire in these areas, but unfortunately, their efforts were in vain. By the evening, the ruins had cooled enough for an inspection, but the extent of the damage was extensive. The interior of the theatre was completely gutted, leaving it unrecognizable from its former glory. The cause of the fire remains a mystery, with no definitive explanation ever being given. The Pavilion Theatre, which had opened just a few years prior to the fire, was a popular venue for live performances and had a seating capacity of over 3,000. The loss of the theatre was a significant blow to the local community, and plans for its reconstruction began almost immediately. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the destructive power of fire and the resilience of those who worked to contain it. Despite the devastation, the spirit of the community remained undeterred, and the Pavilion Theatre was eventually rebuilt, continuing to provide entertainment to generations of Londoners.
