EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Remember Nelson, c1812" by artist Thomas Whitcombe takes us back to a significant moment in naval history. The image depicts the Battle of Lissa, which occurred on 13 March 1811 off the coast of Croatia. In this fierce encounter, a British squadron led by Captain William Hoste faced off against a formidable French and Venetian fleet. The print captures the essence of this historic battle, showcasing the sheer determination and bravery displayed by Captain Hoste's crew. As their ships maneuver through the rough waters of the Adriatic Sea, they rally under the signal "Remember Nelson" paying tribute to Admiral Horatio Nelson who had tragically lost his life at Trafalgar just six years earlier. It serves as a reminder not only of Britain's maritime heritage but also honors those who fought valiantly for their country amidst turbulent times.
