EDITORS COMMENTS
This image, hailing from the pages of the "Illustrated London News" in 1876, documents a pivotal moment in Parisian history: the replacement of the statue of Napoleon I on the Vendome Column. The original column, commissioned by Napoleon in 1806 and completed in 1810, was modelled after Trajan's Column. However, during the Paris Commune in 1871, the painter Gustave Courbet proposed its disassembly, leading to the removal of the statue. The column was subsequently repaired and re-erected in 1875. The photograph captures a group of men, likely workers, hoisting a new statue of Napoleon I onto the column using a pulley system. The statue, dressed in imperial attire, stands tall and proud, symbolizing the reinstatement of the emperor's presence in Paris. The column, a testament to the architectural prowess of the 19th century, stands majestically in the background, its intricate design and grandeur on full display. The image serves as a reminder of the tumultuous history of Paris and the enduring legacy of Napoleon Bonaparte, who, despite the political upheavals of the time, continued to be a source of fascination and reverence for the people of France.
