EDITORS COMMENTS
Revolt of the Beavers, New York, 1937: A Stirring Poster from the Federal Theatre Project This poster, titled "Revolt of the Beavers," dates back to 1937 and was created as part of the Federal Theatre Project (FTP), an initiative established by the U.S. Works Progress Administration (WPA) in 1935. The FTP aimed to conserve and develop theater skills, re-employ theater workers on public relief, and bring live theatrical performances to thousands of Americans who had never before experienced them. The poster, featuring a lone beaver in checked clothing and roller skates, is a striking example of graphic design from the era. The beaver, with a determined expression and a blue bandana covering its eyes, is shown standing defiantly against a backdrop of capital letters spelling out "REVOLT." The poster's design is further enhanced by the use of contrasting colors and bold lettering, which adds to its political and theatrical appeal. The poster's creator remains unknown, but it is believed to have been produced by the FTP's design unit, possibly under the direction of Oscar Saul or Louis Lantz. The poster was likely used for publicity purposes, promoting a play or production put on by the FTP. The image of a beaver in rebellion may have been intended to symbolize the spirit of resistance and change that was prevalent during the New Deal era in the United States. Today, this poster serves as a reminder of the rich cultural heritage of the 1930s and the important role that the Federal Theatre Project played in American history. It is a testament to the power of art and theater to inspire and provoke thought, even in the most unexpected of forms – in this case, a revolting beaver in checkered trousers and roller skates.
