The Revolution in Sicily - narrow escape of our special artist, 1860. Creator: Unknown
The Revolution in Sicily - narrow escape of our special artist, 1860. I met with a gentleman going to Santa Catarina, where the column then was, and we agreed to take a carriage and make route ensemble for mutual protection. My new acquaintance carried the gun which every peasant going to his work bears on his shoulder, as though in Sicily every man's hand was lifted against his neighbour, and to a certain extent such is verily the case, for the revolution has unchained the worst passions of the worst of the population. While passing through a most desolate district, about sixteen miles from Vallelunga, a man suddenly started up from behind a bush of prickly cactus, and, with an imperative gesture of the arm, cried "Stop!" Luckily, I suspected something wrong, and, jumping up in the carriage, shouted in the coachman's ear "Forwards!" and, getting the horses, which were tolerably good, into a gallop, we turned a corner of the road before the brigand - for such he surely was - could fire upon us. As we flew along I gave one glance behind, ready to dodge should a shot come, and perceived half-a-dozen more hastening down from the neighbouring hill to support their comrade'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, titled 'The Revolution in Sicily - narrow escape of our special artist, 1860,' depicts a harrowing account of a journalist's encounter with brigands during the Sicilian Revolution. The image, created by an unknown artist, was published in the Illustrated London News in 1860. The scene unfolds as the journalist, on his way to Santa Catarina to report on the ongoing revolution, meets a fellow traveler who offers mutual protection during their journey. Armed with a gun, the man seemed to be a commoner ready to defend himself against his neighbors, reflecting the volatile state of Sicilian society during this time. As they passed through a desolate area, about sixteen miles from Vallelunga, a man suddenly emerged from behind a cactus bush, ordering them to stop. The journalist, suspecting danger, urged the coachman to accelerate, and they managed to escape before the brigand could fire a shot. The journalist turned back to see more brigands rushing towards them from a nearby hill, intending to support their comrade. The scene captures the chaos and lawlessness that reigned during the Sicilian Revolution, where every man seemed to be against his neighbor. The journalist's narrow escape from certain danger serves as a testament to the dangerous conditions faced by those reporting on the revolution. This photograph, with its gripping narrative, offers a unique insight into the Sicilian Revolution and the challenges faced by those who dared to document it.
