Racehorse and jockey: "Rhedycina" was bred by Mr. Leidiard, of Reading...She was trained by a young man named Goodwin, at Newmarket...The following details of the settling day for the Derby and Oaks are from Bell's Life in London: The principal winners were three or four of Lord Zetland's friends, to the tune of nearly £40, 000. His Lordship himself, who never ventures more than a trifle upon his horses, won only £600; his coachman won £2000! and the whole of his establishment threw in for - to them-good stakes...Mr. Davis alone paid upwards of £40, 000 to parties who had taken tickets for Voltigeur and Rhedycina!...One Irish gentleman won £27, 000, the greater part of which has been invested in the purchase of an estate in Ireland'. EDITORS COMMENTS
Rhedycina, Winner of the Oaks Stakes at Epsom, Surrey, 1850: A Captivating Moment in Horse Racing History This photograph, dating back to the 19th century, immortalizes Rhedycina, the victorious racehorse, moments after winning the prestigious Oaks Stakes at Epsom in Surrey, England, in 1850. The identity of the creator of this engraving remains unknown, but the image has been preserved in the annals of history by The Print Collector. Rhedycina was a remarkable horse, bred by Mr. Leidiard of Reading and trained by a young man named Goodwin at Newmarket. The Oaks Stakes, one of the most prestigious horse races for fillies in the United Kingdom, was part of the Epsom Derby meeting, an annual event that drew the crème de la crème of British society. The year 1850 was a banner year for the race, with significant winnings. The principal winners, including Lord Zetland's friends, amassed nearly £40,000. Despite Lord Zetland's modest £600 winnings, his coachman walked away with a substantial £2,000. Mr. Davis alone paid over £40,000 to those who had placed bets on Voltigeur and Rhedycina. An Irish gentleman even won an impressive £27,000, much of which was invested in the purchase of an estate in Ireland. The excitement surrounding the race was palpable, with the press reporting on every detail. Bell's Life in London and the Illustrated London News were among the publications that covered the event extensively. This photograph, a testament to the thrill of the race and the allure of horse racing in Victorian Britain, continues to captivate us today.
