The Rivals, c1780-1825. Creator: Thomas Rowlandson

The Rivals, c1780-1825. These two young men, one a dashing young officer, the other a gallant but unattractive adventurer, are displaying their simulated affections to the complacent rich dowager, who is unattractive, over-dressed, and decidedly approaching the half-century mark. Both are probably heavily in debt and have the old ladys fortune in mind for gaming or some other diversion. From " The Watercolour Drawings of Thomas Rowlandson from the Albert H. Wiggin Collection in the Boston Public Library" with commentary by Arthur W. Heintzelman. [Watson-Guptill Publications, Inc. New York, 1947]

The Rivals, c1780-1825

EDITORS COMMENTS
by Thomas Rowlandson captures a humorous and satirical scene from the late 18th or early 19th century. In this comical print, two young men vie for the attention and favor of a rich dowager who is well past her prime. The contrast between the dashing young officer and the unattractive adventurer adds to the comedic effect. Both men are likely burdened with heavy debts and see an opportunity in gaining access to the old lady's fortune through flattery or some other diversion. Rowlandson's caricature style brings out their exaggerated features, highlighting their intentions as they compete for her affections. The artist's attention to detail is evident in his depiction of clothing and accessories. The officer wears a tricorn hat while sporting military attire, emphasizing his status and charm. Meanwhile, the adventurer dons an extravagant head dress adorned with ostrich feathers, perhaps attempting to compensate for his lack of attractiveness. Rowlandson's use of watercolor brings vibrant colors to life in this lively scene. A parrot perched on a nearby stand adds another layer of amusement as it observes these rival suitors vying for attention. This print offers viewers a glimpse into social dynamics during that era, where wealth played a significant role in courtship rituals. With its witty commentary on human behavior and societal norms, "The Rivals" remains an entertaining piece that continues to captivate audiences today.
