River Landscape with Riders, c.1653-1657. Creator: Aelbert Cuyp
River Landscape with Riders, c.1653-1657. Other Title(s): River Landscape near Nijmegen with Riders Watering their Horses. Travellers are resting their horses in a sun-soaked river landscape. To judge from their orange shawls, they seem to be Dutch army officers. Cuyp saw these steep hills when he travelled along the River Rhine between Nijmegen and Cleves. It was probably the sketches he drew there that formed the basis for this painting

EDITORS COMMENTS
Aelbert Cuyp's 'River Landscape with Riders' (c.1653-1657), also known as 'River Landscape near Nijmegen with Riders Watering their Horses,' is a stunning 17th-century oil painting that captures the serene beauty of the Dutch countryside. The scene portrays travellers taking a break by a sun-soaked riverbank, where they are watering their horses. The men, dressed in orange shawls, are likely Dutch army officers, reflecting the military presence in the region. Cuyp, a prominent Dutch painter of the Golden Age, was inspired by the steep hills and picturesque landscapes he encountered while travelling along the River Rhine between Nijmegen and Cleves. This painting is believed to be based on sketches he made during his journey. The painting showcases the rich colors and textures of the rural environment, with cows and cattle grazing in the background and a vibrant, verdant landscape stretching out before the viewer. The horses, with their muscular forms and expressive eyes, add a dynamic element to the otherwise tranquil scene. The painting is a testament to the regionalism of the Dutch Golden Age, where artists focused on capturing the unique character of their local landscapes and rural life. The use of oil on canvas or panel lends the painting a sense of depth and realism, making it a valuable addition to any art collection or museum. Overall, 'River Landscape with Riders' is a captivating work of art that invites the viewer to explore the beauty and charm of the Dutch countryside in the 17th century.
