RMS Aquitania, c1930. Creator: Unknown
RMS Aquitania, c1930. The Aquitania was built by John Brown and Company on the Clyde in Scotland for the Cunard Line. Launched in 1914, she was converted for use as an armed merchant cruiser then a troopship during the First World War. After a refit in 1919 she took up her intended role on the transatlantic route to New York. Although slower than some of her rival liners, Aquitania offered more luxurious accomodation. During the Second World War she again served as a troopship. After the war she was used to transport migrants to Canada before she was scrapped in 1950. Postcard. [C.R. Hoffmann, London]

EDITORS COMMENTS
RMS Aquitania, c1930: A Majestic Ocean Liner with a Storied History". This print showcases the grandeur of the RMS Aquitania, an iconic vessel that sailed the seas in the early 20th century. Built by John Brown and Company for the esteemed Cunard Line, this magnificent ship was launched in 1914 amidst great anticipation. During World War I, she underwent transformations to serve as an armed merchant cruiser and later as a troopship. However, after a significant refit in 1919, she resumed her intended role on the transatlantic route to New York. While not renowned for her speed compared to some competitors, Aquitania boasted opulent accommodations that offered unparalleled luxury. The Second World War saw her once again fulfilling her duty as a troopship before transitioning into transporting migrants to Canada post-war. Sadly, despite her illustrious past and loyal service over several decades, she met her end when ultimately scrapped in 1950. This vintage postcard captures both the elegance of Aquitania's design and its historical significance within Britain's shipping industry. The image highlights its distinctive funnels against a backdrop of serene waters—a testament to its enduring legacy as one of history's most beloved ocean liners. As we admire this remarkable print today courtesy of C. R. Hoffmann from London's archives at Heritage Images, let us remember RMS Aquitania as more than just a vessel; it represents an era defined by exploration, resilience during wartime adversity, and unforgettable voyages across vast oceans.
