Roasting the Baron of Beef by Gas, in the Castle-Yard, Exeter, 1850. Creator: Unknown
Roasting the Baron of Beef by Gas, in the Castle-Yard, Exeter, [Devon], 1850. Event during the annual meeting and exhibition of the Royal Agricultural Society. The most novel, if not the most interesting, sight was that of cooking the baron of beef in the Castle-yard, under the inspection of M. Soyer. In the centre of the yard a hole was dug, and lined with perforated pipes, from which proceeded an innumerable quantity of small jets of gas; when the beef was deposited in this hollow, a similar apparatus of perforated pipes closed over the top, so that the meat was enveloped in a continued sheet of fire'. Roasting the Baron of Beef by Gas: A Unique Sight at the Exeter Castle-Yard during the Royal Agricultural Society's Annual Meeting and Exhibition in 1850 This intriguing photograph captures a novel and interesting spectacle that took place in the Castle-Yard of Exeter, Devon, during the Royal Agricultural Society's annual meeting and exhibition in 1850. The most captivating sight was the roasting of a 'Baron of Beef' using gas, under the watchful eye of M. Soyer. In the heart of the yard, a pit was dug and lined with perforated pipes, emitting an innumerable quantity of small jets of gas. The beef was then placed in this hollow, and a similar apparatus of perforated pipes was closed over the top, enveloping the meat in a continuous sheet of fire. The image depicts a group of men, dressed in Victorian attire, gathered around the scene, observing the innovative cooking method with great interest. One man, wearing a top hat, stands particularly close to the pit, perhaps eager to take the first taste of the roast. The contrast between the modern gas-powered contraption and the traditional setting of the Castle-Yard adds to the intrigue of the scene. This photograph, published in the Illustrated London News, offers a fascinating glimpse into the past, showcasing the innovation and curiosity that characterized the 19th century. The use of gas for cooking was a groundbreaking development, and this event in Exeter marked an early adoption of this new technology. The image is a testament to the progress and advancements in science and technology during this time, as well as the enduring appeal of a well-cooked roast beef dinner.
