However his wifes mysterious death in 1560 placed a dark spot on his reputation. In 1561 he suggested to Philip II to restore Roman Catholicism in England in return for Philips endorsement of his to Elizabeth. Yet by 1563 Elizabeth realised the impracticality of such a marriage. EDITORS COMMENTS
This black and white portrait print showcases Robert Dudley, the 1st Earl of Leicester, who held a special place in the heart of Queen Elizabeth I. Painted by R Cooper in 1823, this image captures the essence of a man whose life was marked by both ambition and controversy. Dudley, a prominent courtier during Elizabeth's reign, was considered to be her most likely choice for a husband. However, his reputation suffered greatly when his wife died under mysterious circumstances in 1560. Despite this dark cloud hanging over him, Dudley made an audacious proposal to Philip II: he suggested restoring Roman Catholicism in England in exchange for Philip's endorsement of his marriage to Elizabeth. Yet as time went on, it became clear that such a union would not be practical for Elizabeth. Instead, she offered Dudley's hand to Mary Queen of Scots and bestowed upon him the title of Earl of Leicester in 1564. However, Mary ultimately married Lord Darnley instead. In this striking engraving from the 19th century, we see Dudley portrayed with great dignity and elegance. His regal attire includes intricate lace details on his collar and cuffs while he dons an impressive fur-trimmed coat. The chain around his neck signifies his high status as an aristocrat. Through this print collector's workmanship and attention to detail, we are transported back to the splendorous era of Elizabethan England where power struggles intertwined with love affairs at court. This portrait immortalizes Robert Dudley as one of history's enigmatic figures - forever linked with Queen Elizabeth I but forever shrouded in intrigue.
