EDITORS COMMENTS
This historic photograph captures the moment when Robert Houghwout Jackson was sworn in as Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, on July 11, 1941, in the presence of President Franklin D. Roosevelt and other high-ranking officials of the New Deal administration. The scene took place in the President's Office in Washington, D.C. Jackson, who had been associated with the New Deal for seven years, is seen here in a handshake with the President, with his wife Irene Gerhardt Jackson and their daughter Mary looking on with pride. The image, taken by Harris & Ewing photographers George William Harris and Martha Ewing Kuntze, is a testament to Jackson's remarkable legal career, which included service as a U.S. Solicitor General and Attorney General before his appointment to the Supreme Court. The photograph is a valuable addition to the Heritage Art Collection at the Library of Congress, documenting an important moment in American legal and political history.
