EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the remarkable Roman theatre of Salamis in North Cyprus. Steeped in history, this archaeological site has revealed remnants dating back to the 11th century BC, offering a glimpse into ancient civilizations that once thrived here. Evidence of Phoenician and Assyrian settlements have been unearthed, while later it became a prominent Greek city-state capital. During its heyday in Roman times, Salamis flourished as an important city, leaving behind impressive ruins that still stand today. Among these ruins is the grand theatre, capable of accommodating an astounding 15,000 spectators. Its terraced seating arrangement speaks volumes about the scale and significance of entertainment during those times. However, this magnificent city faced its fair share of challenges throughout history. Devastating earthquakes struck in the 4th century AD causing severe damage to Salamis' structures. Eventually, it met its demise when it was sacked during the Arab invasion of Cyprus in 649 AD. Now abandoned yet awe-inspiring, this ancient site serves as a testament to human ingenuity and endurance across centuries. The photo captures not only the architectural marvels but also offers glimpses into daily life with streets lined with buildings and furniture from bygone eras. Peter Thompson's lens skillfully brings out every detail and color within this historical landscape – transporting viewers on a visual journey through time without commercial intent or association with any specific company or use.
